gamble + DESIGN’s latest project is complete. For Jeni Gamble, designing and building a kitchen for her lifelong best friend / famous entertainer Candis Cayne, came together like so many of the forts and doll houses that they made as kids. This previously outdated kitchen with 80’s floral tile, plexi-covered fluorescents, and overbearing cabinetry needed a full gut. A new larger archway was created (inspired by Californian Deco-style) which connected the kitchen and never-used nook to one of Candis’ favorite spaces: her backyard. Changing these aspects created an indoor-outdoor symbiosis, fitting with the home’s Southern California environment.
The salvaged industrial metal doors and windows gave the new space the perfect nod to the home original Tudor architecture. Inspired by Candis’ timelessly sense of style, gamble + DESIGN opened up and modernized the kitchen by leaving out upper cabinets, adding countertops in a honed marble, and coming up with a custom-patterned wall tiles which integrated the pattern of the sconce lighting, and wide-planked dark-stained flooring in a chevron pattern. Last but not least, Candis’ kitchen was equipped with custom pull-out dog bowls for functionality.
With Candis’ own glamorous and original taste infused with Jeni’s expertise and eye-for-restraint design, the process lead to a space not just livable but lovable.
