Historic Home Renovation
San Francisco, California
This full-service interior design project revives a classic Victorian home in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Our goal was to restore its original character while bringing it into the present with modern comfort and functionality.
We raised the ceilings to their original 11-foot height and introduced period details like ornamental plasterwork, salvaged hardware, and traditional trim. The kitchen blends timeless millwork with modern function, featuring custom cabinetry, concealed appliances, and a layout tailored to the homeowner’s needs.
Materials were selected with history and texture in mind—from reclaimed wood flooring to preserved original wallpaper. Our lighting design team installed hand-blown Murano glass fixtures to take advantage of the restored ceiling height, while stone countertops and a custom mural add richness and depth.
In the adjacent bar area, Victorian-style tile meets soft LED lighting for a space that feels both grounded and contemporary. We also designed a custom bay window bench, upholstered in aged William Morris fabric for a final touch of historic charm.
Gamble + Design provided kitchen and bath design, lighting design, furniture, fixtures and equipment selection, and custom millwork coordination—delivering a thoughtful and timeless historic home renovation in the heart of San Francisco.
