Sea Ranch Coastal House

Sea Ranch, California

Set along the rugged coastline of Sea Ranch, this residence was reimagined as a refined yet understated retreat for a Bay Area family, balancing the integrity of the original architecture with the needs of contemporary living.

While the home required a comprehensive renovation, it also offered a strong architectural foundation. The design approach focused on preservation as much as transformation—retaining the spirit of the structure while introducing a more functional and cohesive interior.

A full reworking of the layout was central to the project. The kitchen and bathrooms were entirely reconfigured to improve flow and usability. Each intervention was considered within the larger context of the home, ensuring continuity from space to space.

The project was also informed by a deep personal connection to Sea Ranch. With a family history in the community dating back decades, the home was conceived as a place of retreat—one that encourages a slower pace and a closer connection to the surrounding landscape. This perspective guided a restrained material palette and a design language rooted in simplicity.

Architectural elements were carefully refined rather than replaced. The fireplace was reimagined as a focal point, existing wood paneling was restored, and the iconic wood ceilings—so central to Sea Ranch design—were brought back to life and paired with new insulation for improved performance. Edge-cut wood flooring and a reworked staircase introduced a quiet sense of craftsmanship and continuity throughout.

Furnishings and built-ins were developed in tandem with the architecture, resulting in a highly integrated interior. Custom elements include a mohair-upholstered sofa, window benches, a Murphy bed, and millwork solutions for the primary bedroom, bar, home office, and media areas. The bar, designed for collecting local wines from Sonoma, reinforces the home’s connection to Northern California.

Artwork was sourced primarily from vintage and retro pieces, lending a sense of history and patina, while a contemporary work anchors the main living space. Accessories were curated with a focus on handmade ceramics and tactile materials, reflecting the artisanal ethos long associated with Sea Ranch.

The result is a home that feels both grounded and intentional—an environment shaped by restraint, materiality, and a deep respect for place. It stands as a continuation of a family tradition, offering a setting for new memories while remaining firmly connected to its past.
